The New King Of Tonga

His Majesty King Siaosi(George) Tupou V, was sworn in as the new King of Tonga on 11 September 2006, which also made him the 23rd Tu'i Kanokupolu(the overlords of Tongatapu). He is the eldest son of the late King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV and her Majesty Queen Halaevalu Mata'aho 'Ahome'e.

King Tupou V was born on 4 May 1948. He attended Primary school in Switzerland and Secondary school at King's College in Auckland, New Zealand. He studied at Oxford University and the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in England.

He was appointed as Crown Prince in 1966 and was known as Tupouto'a. As crowned prince, he held great influence in Tongan politics and was Minister for Foreign Affairs from 1979 to 1998.
His Majesty owns some of Tonga's biggest businesses, including the Island's only power company, a brewerey and a Mobile Phone Company.

The Coronation, planned to be held this year following the official mourning period for his father, is now scheduled for 1 August 2008. His Majesty has decided to give his attention to the reconstruction of the destroyed capital from the 2006 riot before he is crowned.
